    Another exciting Pitch Day is taking place!

    The teams pitch for the 4th Berlin Startup Scholarship (BSS)

    Numerous startup teams are eagerly awaiting their big day: the selection day before our jury for the Berlin Startup Scholarship!

    We will reveal which teams make it shortly.

    But a big thank you here to our wonderful jury.

    From our own ranks, the wonderful startup coaches Nora Revermann and Viola Breuer are participating, as well as the co-director of the SIB Marvin Göldner.

    The external jury members are:

    Prof. Dr. Andrea Rumler | HWR Berlin

    Andrea Rumler is a professor of general business administration and marketing. Before her academic career, she worked for three years at the Bertelsmann publishing group, most recently as marketing director. She then co-founded and served as managing director of the furniture retailer Modern Living Inc. in New York, USA. In 1997 she was appointed professor at the FHTW, later HTW, Berlin. From 2002 to 2003 she headed a program there to promote entrepreneurship among women, “Fit für die eigene Existenz”. From 2003 to 2005 she was the academic mentor of the HAFEN Incubator for female entrepreneurs in Berlin-Marzahn. In 2012 she moved to HWR Berlin and has since mentored a number of startups (including Mello, Native Foods, whoelse.ai, Strayz, Aam Digital and UpLyft).

    Norbert has been dealing with uncertainties to create enabling environments, in Berlin, in Johannesburg and elsewhere. Since 2017 Norbert has been handling startup-affairs at Berlin Government, Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises. He is keen on connecting with and better understanding and supporting the ecosystem. Before, he worked with the Berlin Institute of Technology, Centre for Entrepreneurship, eBay, Technology Foundation Berlin, and many more.

    Aziz Sulaiman Rahim | Siemens Energy Ventures

    As principal of Siemens Energy Ventures, Aziz sets the framework to identify and onboard new startup technologies to help solve today’s key challenges in the energy industry. In this role he is particularly interested in investment opportunities in the climate tech for Siemens Energy and leads Siemens Energy’s Venture Client unit to pilot and adopt startup solutions.

    In his 5+ years within the Siemens Group, he held several leadership roles, in which he established global partnership networks, implemented the transfer of innovative technologies, and developed strategies for new business fields. In his role at Siemens Energy Ventures, Aziz is committed to turning today’s ideas into the reality of tomorrow by driving effective and meaningful partnerships between Siemens Energy and top global Startups.

    At the Startup Incubator of HWR Berlin, founding ideas are developed to market readiness. To this end, we support academic founding teams with know-how, infrastructure and scholarships. We create a shared platform for entrepreneurial thinking and action (mindset) with the Berlin business community (including Siemens AG). As a lean incubator, we focus on speed in developing and validating business models with customers.

    Since 2016, the Startup Incubator Berlin has been supporting founding teams with the Berlin Startup Scholarship, now also with the REACT Startup Scholarship. Over 30 startups have been helped by this financial and non-financial support, combined with the infrastructure provided by the HWR Berlin’s entrepreneurship center, to successfully develop their business ideas and products. Well-known startups such as Wonder, Forget Finance, SunCrafter and startupdetector are today successfully active in the market. Forget Finance recently closed a seed funding round of €3.8 million.

  • The Magic of Startupnight – SUN X Digital Week

    The Magic of Startupnight – SUN X Digital Week

    The #Startupnight 2022 was special in many ways: The networking event for the startup ecosystem celebrated its 10th birthday (hence the title SUN X), it came back as a big live event after two digital editions during the pandemic, and it presented three full days of programming with a wide spectrum of topics, speakers, impulses, sponsors and – of course – startups.

    The Startup Incubator Berlin was an official partner and the curator of the Incubator Day on Friday, September 9th, packed with a colourful program before closing with the actual Startupnight party.

    It was an honor, and some hard work for many weeks: A steering committee was established, weekly meetings held to coordinate agendas, plans were drawn up for guest speakers and panels, workshops defined and exhibitors lists built and re-built.

    The result was a thrilling day with many highlights:

    • over 20 Incubators exhibited at the Incubator Day, bringing along one startup each to pitch against each other for Super Demo Day (€ 1000 prize award from the Berliner Sparkasse)
    • 7 Workshops were held to different topics such as the Lean Startup Method, rapid prototying, Legal 101 for Startups and more.
    • The X-Challenge took place for two days in a separate lounge to tackle the question on „How to find the perfect (business) match” . About 30 strangers came together, spontaneously formed teams and worked in a professional Design Thinking workshop on a new approach. The three finalists pitched at the end of the Incubator Day on stage, and the winning team was awarded € 2,000 by the Icecubator and Spitzhorli Invest AG.

    Over 30 Speakers went on stage to talk about their expertise and share their know-how: From project management leaders to representatives of all incubators to the Business Angel Club Berlin Brandenburg e.V. with three duos of investors and founders.

    At the end of the day, the incubators emptied their booths in record time to make space for their startups represented. An impressive collection of 120 startups exhibited at the Startupnight, from Ed-Tech to High-Tech, from Sustainability to Aerospace. So very impressive!

    So what was the magic for us in this huge project?

    The magic of the Startupnight was to see all incubator in one big hall, hard-working colleagues that all support the Berlin Startup Ecosysystem and their startups to become successful.

    And most wonderful of all was to see that our startups from the Startup Incubator Berlin where visible everywhere: There was a2zebra who pitched for Super Demo Day and reached the finals. Participating in the X-Challenge were two co-founders from our teams Trueffles and Stella. And Tina from Trueffles won the X-Challenge with her team!

    Joining the Workshop from professional Wafm Academie about the potential of team members was our team prevact. The team Cleverlohn made it in the Masterclass program of the HTW after finishing the Berlin Startup Scholarship with us. CBright and DocVox were nominated for the Pitching Stage in the evening by investors.

    More SIB teams could be found among the exhibitors, such as We4All, Sittery, Kursinsel, Hale, Robbi and our dear alumni teams such as Bearcover, Brea, LexHub and truemetrics who meanwhile joined different programs in other incubators or secured their investments already.

    What does this mean to us?

    Public funding for startups works! Our offers for our startup teams work! Working together in a wide network of the Berlin startup ecosystem works!

    And last but not least: We are very proud of our startup teams and happy to accompany them on their journey to success. Big applause!

    HWR Berlin is among the first signatories of the Entrepreneurial Skills Charter of the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft. Prof. Dr. Sven Ripsas co-authored the document. An interview.

    About the Person

    Prof. Dr. Sven Ripsas is Professor of Entrepreneurship at the Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR Berlin). He advocates for the promotion of Entrepreneurial Education in education from school through university. His central research focus is on the development of innovative business models.

    What are Entrepreneurial Skills?

    Entrepreneurship Education encompasses a wide range of future-relevant competencies along the so-called 21st Century Skills and the UN Sustainability Goals (SDGs). These skills include communication and problem-solving in interdisciplinary teams. The social-ecological transformation requires all fields of knowledge: digitalization, ecology, and economics. Above all, however, it is about restructuring teaching in schools and universities away from the mere transmission of knowledge toward agile interdisciplinary problem-solving through “discovery learning.” The university leadership of HWR Berlin supports this charter — that is wonderful.

    Where are these skills important in everyday life and work?

    Everyday life is increasingly less predictable. This will apply to a great many professions in the future and already applies today to managers, politicians, and teachers. Decisions must be made in ever-new contexts. Old strategies are not always appropriate. The focus is shifting away from planning and monitoring execution toward situational assessment of needs and opportunities and making decisions agreed upon within a team.

    Why does a society need the broadest possible Entrepreneurial Mindset across all areas?

    Quite clearly: the social-ecological transformation is a mammoth task. Furthermore, in Germany, people have not yet recognized the power of Entrepreneurship Education, even though it has been a central educational goal in the European Union for years.

    How do you get people to think and act entrepreneurially?

    We need to start at school. Entrepreneurs are not capitalists, but changemakers. The decision-makers of tomorrow are in school today. Many then go on to vocational training or university studies. This is what we have been working toward at HWR Berlin for years with the German Entrepreneurship Education Campus, which will take place again in October.

    What role do universities play, and what can they do concretely?

    We need a cultural shift at universities. HWR Berlin is a pioneer in this regard. We not only have special degree programs for entrepreneurs, the StartupClass of the Entrepreneurship Summer School Berlin in August, and a Startup Incubator Berlin, but we are also actively involved in conveying entrepreneurship skills to employees within companies — the keyword being “entrepreneurs within companies.”

    What would you see as the next necessary step?

    Entrepreneurship Skills must be structurally embedded in the curriculum of all degree programs. We are working on that. The recently adopted Entrepreneurial Skills Charter will help us to involve other departments beyond the economic sciences. The goal is ultimately a strategy paper for the entire university.

    You were involved in developing the Entrepreneurial Skills Charter. What is it meant to achieve, and for whom?

    The Entrepreneurial Skills Charter is a milestone. It makes clear that entrepreneurship is not only about founding companies, but is a mindset. It is about creative, interdisciplinary problem-solving at the intersection of sustainability, digitalization, and economics.

    What expertise and experience were you able to contribute?

    My focus is entrepreneurship as an economic process. My doctoral dissertation already dealt with incentive structures for entrepreneurial action. In my view, today’s Entrepreneurship Education frequently lacks the competency to properly assess market incentives and their resulting consequences in the context of political initiatives. This is where I want to make a contribution.

    On what recent occasion did you consciously apply your Entrepreneurial Skills?

    Essentially every day, because the work of a professor is project-oriented, and it always involves creating something new.

    The Startup Incubator Berlin takes 3rd place in the competition among idea forges at the Business Plan Competition Berlin-Brandenburg. This is a great success for the founding center of HWR Berlin.

    The Startup Incubator Berlin of HWR Berlin takes 3rd place in the competition among idea forges at the Business Plan Competition Berlin-Brandenburg 2022.     Universities in Berlin and Brandenburg are regarded as idea forges of the startup scene. The Business Plan Competition Berlin-Brandenburg (BPW) recognizes the commitment of universities in the capital and the region in the field of startup promotion every year in the Study category.

    The Startup Incubator Berlin (SIB), the founding center of the Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR Berlin), takes third place this year, with only three points separating it from the Technical University of Berlin and one from Humboldt University, ranking as the only university of applied sciences in the capital among the top 3.

    Matthias Grytzka, one of the two heads of the Startup Incubator Berlin: “We are very proud that our founding teams have achieved such a strong ranking in the competition among the best idea forges in Berlin and Brandenburg. This result reflects not only the wealth of ideas and dedication of our startups and students, but also confirms that the unique support provided by HWR Berlin’s university founding ecosystem pays off. It is carried by individual professorships, through the departments, all the way to university leadership. We are thrilled that our work contributes to Berlin being regarded today as the startup capital of Europe.”

    1,000 students from universities and universities of applied sciences in Berlin and Brandenburg had participated in the competition. A total of 352 business concepts were submitted, many of them by women, as the BPW reports. HWR Berlin holds its own in the strong field of participants as one of the most startup-active universities in Berlin.

    “With our successful founding center, we create the framework conditions under which creative startup teams can develop well together with established companies, thus offering a crystallization point for knowledge transfer between academia and business,” says Prof. Dr. Andreas Zaby, President of HWR Berlin. “We want the spark of the entrepreneurial spirit to spread to the degree programs of our university. That is why the founding center, why interdisciplinary entrepreneurial education is so important to us,” says Zaby.

    The founding center of HWR Berlin creates space for business ideas to emerge and offers the necessary broad-based, intensive support to develop them further. In this attractive environment, those interested in founding become teams and ideas become market-ready products and services. The exchange between startups is a central element of this. When everything goes well, a company is ultimately founded. “The team and the entrepreneurial spirit of our Startup Incubator provide the opportunity and contribute significantly to enabling founders to realize their dreams and ideas,” says Grytzka.

    What makes this startup hub, with locations at Campus Schöneberg and the A32 Entrepreneurs Forum Berlin Siemensstadt, special is that the teams work according to the Lean Startup method and are coached accordingly. At its core, it is about involving potential customers early on in order to align the development of products and services closely with market needs from the very beginning. Financial assistance is available during the founding phase through the Berlin Startup Scholarship. The strategy is paying off: approximately 95 percent of the supported startups establish incorporated companies and themselves become economic actors.

    “Startups have great strategic importance for Berlin and the region as a business location. Spin-offs from academia play a special role in this. The transfer between research and practice drives innovation, is an engine of structural change, and creates the jobs of the future,” emphasizes Zaby.

    In the 2018 Founding Radar of the Stifterverband der deutschen Wissenschaft, the Berlin School of Economics and Law emerged as one of the best universities of applied sciences (HAW) in Germany. With funding from the Federal Ministry, it can continue and further develop its successful startup promotion, drawing and setting impulses as a member of the network of successful German founding universities. HWR Berlin is focusing on three priorities for strategic expansion:

    • HWR Berlin Startup Boosters: a regional network that directly benefits the supported startups
    • Open Startup Academy: a regional network that ensures the institutionalized anchoring of HWR Berlin in the regional startup ecosystem
    • International Startup Community: knowledge and personnel transfer between partner universities to support the regional network.

    Hello, my name is Janine Korbaniak and I have been part of the BPW team for 6 years. At BPW I coordinate the seminar program and serve as the point of contact for sponsors and universities. I am particularly pleased that, in this capacity, I get to be part of the jury of the Startup Incubator Berlin for the Berlin Startup Scholarship. Through my work at BPW, but also as part of the jury, I am time and again fascinated anew by the wealth of ideas and the drive of the founders.

    Dr. Avo Schönbohm has been a Professor of Business Administration at the Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Recht Berlin since 2010. His research expertise lies in the areas of (strategic) performance management, enterprise gamification, and digital cultural transformation. Prior to his work at HWR Berlin, Avo held various international positions in the mechanical engineering industry and concluded his pre-academic career in 2010 as Vice President Strategic Planning at Voith Paper GmbH. With LUDEO, he founded an agency in 2016 that enables leadership and cultural transformations across various industries through playful interventions.

    Born in Baku and raised in Berlin. Abitur in 2007, also in 2007 began studying “Entrepreneurship” (business founding & succession) at HWR.

    Back then, nobody could make much of the cryptic word “Entrepreneurship”. However, I always knew that I wanted to create something myself and go into self-employment. Finished my studies in 2011 and since then have been active in various areas of entrepreneurship. My focus is in the area of project development.

    My connection with the Startup Incubator came about when we owned the building at Rohrdamm 22 — essentially directly across from the Incubator. At the time I saw that it was curated by HWR together with Siemens and always wanted to pursue my further passion of helping to build up additional companies (startups). I saw the Startup Incubator as an ideal potential nucleus for this. On the one hand, I am connected to HWR as a former alumnus, and on the other hand I also wanted to bring some practical entrepreneurship to the place.

    That is how the partnership developed, and I was already involved in the first Make-it-Lean Contest. Now we are developing further formats with the Incubator through the Blockathon, and so the opportunity to participate as a jury member in the pitches also came about quite naturally.

  • Girl’s Day 2022

    Today, April 28, 2022, is Girls’ Day, the Future Day for Girls. It is a day on which girls can discover new professions that, due to the status quo, are still often considered male-dominated fields, such as computer science, industrial mechanics, or skilled trades.

    When it comes to #founding and #investing, women are also underrepresented. The share of women founding startups is still below 20%!

    And that’s where we come in.

    We at Startup Incubator Berlin support the Girls’Day – Mädchen-Zukunftstag campaign by aiming to have at least 50% women in our #Startup teams. To that end, we asked our #femalefounders what they have to say about founding a company and what advice they would give their younger selves.

For example, 8 girls are developing a business idea on the topic of “The School of the Future.” A very important topic! We are very excited to see what comes out of it.

    Internally as well, we are committed to fostering more female-led ventures. Currently, 50% of our founders are women. In addition, our Marketing and PR Manager Cindy is dedicated to increasing the visibility of women through her platform The Bold Woman.

    Startup teams can apply for the Berlin Startup Scholarship and the REACT Startup Scholarship until April 17, 2022. For six months, the Berlin Startup Scholarship provides 2,000 euros per month and per team member from funds from the European Social Fund (ESF) and the state of Berlin.     Application & requirements

    In addition to an academic degree and a place of residence in Berlin, the prerequisite for applying for the scholarships is a first prototype or a prototype-like process, i.e. first concrete ideas for an entrepreneurial solution to a relevant problem. During the funding period, the teams in the Startup Incubator Berlin will receive extensive support and the ideal framework to further developing their prototypes and business ideas using the lean startup methodology and peer learning.

    Infrastructure & Coaching

    The coworking spaces of the HWR Berlin start-up center are located in Siemensstadt ² at Rohrdamm in Berlin. At this generous and modernly equipped startup hub, the teams can use a design thinking lab, a mixed reality (AR/VR) lab, a smart device & robotic lab and a prototyping lab (3D Printing and more). The coaching team of the Startup Incubator Berlin, external consultants, mentors from the HWR Berlin as well as sponsors of the large partner network of companies, public institutions and associations support the teams. There are also special training offers and regular events such as UX testing, investment pitches, diversity formats and co-founder matching.

    Application period & initial interview

    Interested founders can now apply for the scholarships now. The teams must consist of at least two and a maximum of three people. An individual preliminary interview with the coaching team at Startup Incubator Berlin is mandatory for the application. Appointments for this must be made by April 8, 2022 via the SIB website.

Then the Startup Incubator Berlin – the founding center of the Berlin School of Economics and Law – is exactly the right place for you!

    The Startup Incubator Berlin (SIB) at the Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR Berlin) supports founders in developing business concepts and prototypes through to market readiness. Starting in June 2022, new financial support will be available – in addition to coworking, coaching, fully equipped workshops and labs, and access to the extensive SIB network as part of Berlin’s startup ecosystem.

    Financial Support & More

    Founding teams can apply until April 17, 2022 for the Berlin Startup Scholarship and the REACT Startup Scholarship. For six months, the Berlin Startup Scholarship provides 2,000 euros per month per person from funds provided by the European Social Fund (ESF) and the State of Berlin. The REACT Startup Scholarship is funded from the same sources in cooperation with the Berlin University of Applied Sciences (BHT) and is specifically aimed at founders in the healthcare industry. The funding period here is nine months.

Founders will receive concrete tips for preparing the application documents during the meeting. Afterwards, the application documents are to be uploaded.

    The Startup Incubator of HWR Berlin

    At the Startup Incubator of HWR Berlin, startup ideas are developed to market readiness. To this end, we support academic founding teams with know-how, infrastructure, and scholarships. We create a shared platform for entrepreneurial thinking and action (mindset) together with Berlin’s business community (including Siemens AG). As a lean incubator, we focus on speed in developing and validating business models with customers.

    Since 2016, the Startup Incubator Berlin has been supporting founding teams with the Berlin Startup Scholarship, and now also with the REACT Startup Scholarship. More than 30 startups have used this financial and non-material support, combined with the infrastructure provided by the founding center of HWR Berlin, to successfully develop their business ideas and products. Well-known startups such as Wonder, Forget Finance, SunCrafter, and startupdetector are successfully active in the market today. Forget Finance recently closed a seed funding round of €3.8 million.

    The Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR Berlin) expresses its deeply felt solidarity with the entire Ukrainian population, and especially with its partner universities Yaroslav Mudryi National Law University in Kharkiv, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and Odessa National Polytechnic University.

    With immediate effect, HWR Berlin is taking initial concrete measures to support Ukrainian students as well as researchers and academics. These include free guest study for students from Ukrainian universities affected by the war in Ukraine, or participation in the university’s German language courses to attain a C1 language level for individuals holding a Ukrainian university entrance qualification. The university is also supporting student initiatives for the reception, accommodation, or care of people who have fled the war in Ukraine with additional resources.

    Prof. Dr. Andreas Zaby, President of HWR Berlin: “HWR Berlin is, out of deep conviction, a particularly internationally oriented university. We stand firmly by the side of our Ukrainian partners and wish to expand our academic cooperation.” He adds: “We are following the recommendations of German academic organizations and will suspend cooperation projects with Russian universities. This is deeply regrettable, as we know that large parts of the Russian academic community condemn this war of aggression. We will continue to maintain our friendly relations with our Russian colleagues.”

    HWR Berlin currently has approximately 50 students with Ukrainian citizenship enrolled. Through its university partnerships, HWR Berlin also regularly welcomes exchange students as well as professors from Ukraine.

    Applications for the REACT Berlin Startup Scholarship for startups from the healthcare sector including life sciences, digital health, and hardware development are now open.

    The REACT Berlin Startup Scholarship from the Startup Incubator Berlin (HWR) and the Startup Hub at BHT is entering its second round, and startup teams can apply now. This scholarship supports innovative founding ideas with solutions for the healthcare sector. Each team member receives €2,000 / month for nine months.

    What do you need to do?

    • Schedule an appointment via the initial consultation form with the coaches from SIB and BHT by April 8, 2022
    • Upload application documents (concept paper, pitch deck, various application forms) on the website by April 17, 2022

    Important: Teams must consist of two to three people, all scholarship recipients require a registered address in Berlin, a bachelor’s degree, and the startup must not yet have been founded or must have been founded no more than 3 months before the application deadline.

    What does the program offer    ?

    The program combines the expertise of both university startup centers. This includes not only support from experienced coaches but also access to the infrastructure including a prototype workshop, Robotic Lab, Smart Device Lab, Video Studio, and co-working spaces.

    The goal is to rapidly develop founding ideas to market readiness and to sustainably support teams through the existing network in the Berlin startup ecosystem. Teams in the programs are connected within the healthcare sector and beyond with pilot customers, business mentors, business angels, investors, and other stakeholders.
